eFusion — NFC Badges for Electric Vehicle Charging

About eFusion

eFusion operates a growing network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across multiple regions. Their service allows EV drivers to subscribe to a membership plan, receive a personalized NFC badge, and use it to authenticate and initiate charging sessions at any eFusion station. The badge is the physical key to the entire charging experience -- every subscriber needs one, and every badge must be unique.

The Challenge

As eFusion's subscriber base grew, their badge production process became a bottleneck. New subscribers were signing up individually, at unpredictable intervals, and each one required a custom NFC badge with the following characteristics:

  • Branded design: The badge had to feature eFusion's logo, colors, and visual identity.
  • Unique NFC encoding: Each badge's embedded NFC chip needed to be programmed with the subscriber's unique identifier, linking the physical card to their account in the eFusion system.
  • Individual fulfillment: Each badge had to be shipped directly to the subscriber's home address -- not in bulk to a warehouse.

Managing this process manually was unsustainable. Ordering badges in bulk meant delays for new subscribers and wasted inventory when designs or branding changed. Producing badges one at a time through a traditional print shop was expensive, slow, and error-prone. eFusion needed a solution that could handle on-demand, single-unit production with full personalization and direct-to-subscriber shipping.

The Solution: Printags API Integration

eFusion integrated the Printags API directly into their subscriber onboarding workflow. The entire badge production process is now fully automated, with no manual steps between a subscriber signing up and receiving their badge.

How It Works

  1. A new subscriber registers on the eFusion platform. They complete the sign-up process, enter their shipping address, and activate their membership.
  2. The eFusion system sends an API request to Printags. This request contains all the information needed to produce the badge: the subscriber's name, unique account identifier, NFC encoding instructions, and delivery address. The badge design template -- featuring eFusion's branding -- is pre-configured in the Printags system.
  3. Printags prints the badge. The card is produced on high-quality PVC in the standard CR80 format, with full-color printing on both sides. The eFusion logo, the subscriber's name, and any other variable data are printed with precision.
  4. The NFC chip is encoded. During production, the embedded NFC chip is programmed with the subscriber's unique identifier. When the badge is tapped against a charging station, the station reads this identifier and authenticates the session against the eFusion backend.
  5. The badge is shipped directly to the subscriber. The finished badge is packaged in eFusion-branded packaging and sent to the subscriber's home address via tracked delivery. The subscriber receives their badge ready to use -- no activation steps required.

Technical Details

  • API integration: RESTful API with JSON payloads. eFusion's development team completed the integration in under a week.
  • NFC chip type: NTAG213, chosen for its compatibility with the charging station readers already deployed across the eFusion network.
  • Variable data: Each badge includes the subscriber's name and a unique machine-readable identifier encoded in the NFC chip.
  • Design management: The badge design template is stored in the Printags system. When eFusion updates their branding, they upload a new template -- all subsequent badges automatically use the updated design.

Results

The automated badge production system has been running in production since eFusion's integration with Printags, and the results speak for themselves.

Delivery Speed

5 days from sign-up to badge delivery. New subscribers receive their personalized NFC badge within five business days of completing registration. This is a dramatic improvement over the previous process, which involved batch ordering and could take several weeks.

Error Rate

0% production errors. Because all variable data -- names, NFC encoding, shipping addresses -- flows directly from the eFusion system to Printags via API, there are no manual transcription steps where errors could be introduced. Every badge is produced exactly as specified.

Cost Efficiency

Lower cost than in-house production. eFusion evaluated the cost of purchasing their own card printer, NFC encoder, and consumables. The Printags on-demand model proved more economical, especially considering the elimination of inventory management, equipment maintenance, and dedicated staff time.

White-Label Experience

The subscriber never sees the Printags name. Every badge is shipped in eFusion-branded packaging with eFusion's return address. From the subscriber's perspective, the badge comes directly from eFusion. This seamless white-label fulfillment reinforces eFusion's brand at every touchpoint.

Scalability

No production ceiling. Whether eFusion signs up 10 new subscribers in a week or 1,000, the Printags system handles the volume automatically. There is no need to forecast demand, pre-order inventory, or worry about production capacity. The system scales linearly with growth.

Key Takeaways

The eFusion case demonstrates several principles that apply to any organization producing personalized NFC cards at scale:

  • API-first production eliminates manual work. When badge production is triggered automatically by your existing systems, you remove bottlenecks, errors, and delays.
  • On-demand, single-unit production is viable and cost-effective. You do not need to order in bulk or maintain inventory. Each badge is produced when it is needed.
  • White-label fulfillment protects your brand. Your subscribers, members, or customers receive a product that looks and feels like it came from you.
  • NFC encoding during production saves time. The badge arrives ready to use, with no additional activation or programming required by the end user.

About the Partnership

eFusion continues to use Printags as their exclusive badge production partner. As their charging network expands into new regions, the Printags API handles the growing volume without any changes to the integration. The system that worked for their first hundred subscribers works identically for their ten-thousandth.
